I Love Mail!
Do you love mail? I certainly do.
When I was a little girl, whenever my mother would get the mail out of our mailbox, she would call me and say, "Gena, you've got mail!" I would run down the stairs with such excitement. What a joyous memory of my mommy, who was my gift from God. I chuckle now remembering that "my mail" was anything that said, "occupant" or "current resident"! Too funny.
I am 57 now and realize how much shaped me in my formative years to be the creative that I am now. The belief in fictional characters, performing in plays, being president of my class, that and so much more is a treasure of things that developed me. Would you agree?
My mother, who was an educator, passed away in my arms at a young 84. Post-pandemic, she lost her zeal and would not come out of the house. It was so hard to witness such a strong woman retreat into someone I could not fathom ever seeing in her.
In 2017, I founded HEY, Sister, a nonprofit, as a result to my rare cancer diagnosis, to bring prevention and awareness. At the time, I had no clue that my mother's passing would lead to expand my mission to include the revitalization and sustaining of seniors.
In 2024, I added Seniority Status as a program and started hosting Fun in the Afternoon for seniors age 55 and over. We have a good ol' time every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month; we also have other outings to the movies, plays, restaurants, etc., so that those who spend a lot of time alone have peers to enjoy things they wouldn't normally do by themselves.
As a natural storyteller, I also started a mail service that sends scam and fraud prevention stories in two-part letter form to seniors to give a different view for them to understand the dangers and how they can happen. I send these letters out twice monthly. They are personalized and mailed, folded inside greeting cards, and include a little keepsake in each.
